    • NO KIDS are allowed in the press box.

    THURSDAY'S PRACTICE / MAJOR CHANGE / NOW @ HIGHLANDS 5-7PM

    Rookie Green:

The Skyline Youth Football Association e-mailed the coaches tonight and told us we can not use Pine Lake Field tomorrow. The school sent a last minute e-mail cancelling because of a track meet of some kind.

We are going back to the Highlands from 5-7pm tomorrow for more work against our good friends at Issaquah Gold. I was calling around and could have potentially squeezed us onto another field with other Skyline teams... but I spoke with the Issy coach and he gave us a deal that's too good to pass up. He says he wants his boys to practice against quality competition and thinks our boys present great challenges. He also says since they only have 14 or 15 guys... they can't scrimmage each other and rarely can practice special teams... I was just looking for a piece of their field to practice alone.. not wanting to bug them twice in one week.. instead what we've decided on is this.... We'll split the practice into 20- minute segments. I'm sending them details on our Saturday opponent (Liberty) and they will run the Liberty power offense against us so our defense can get good practice... They want to try to run a different kind of offense as well... We'll also get a chance to play our offense against a "Liberty Style" defense.. and our offense against the "regular" Issy Gold defense.

So... tomorrow's practice is 5-7pm at the Highlands... the same turf soccer fields in Central Park!! We're very lucky to play this team as often as we do.. I think in the long run it'll make our Spartans better.

    Take care..

    SYFA - Unsportsmanlike Conduct

GEJFA sent out an email this weekend, discussing multiple cases of unacceptable behavior at some games this weekend.  Some reported by opponent coaches, some reported by officials and even one case reported by a spectator who was there just to watch kids play.  Coaches swearing, coaches arguing with officials, coaches calling for fouls, coaches choosing or refusing to shake hands at the end of the game, fans swearing, confronting officials, etc.
Although we know that the SYFA coaches' and parents would not be involved in this type of behavior, the league has asked that we forward the NFHS Rule 9 Contact Foul for all coaches to review.   GEJFA follows the NFHS Rules and all SYFA teams received a copy when they picked up their Master Rosters.
Please be aware that the officials will be instructed to penalize teams for poor behavior/sportsmanship.  The later may also mean ejections.
If you have any comments, please let us know.

Parents can start breathing again / 3-1 Rookie Green / tough game this week

    Hi Rookie Green:

You can start breathing again. What a nerve-racking finish.... I told the kids it doesn't matter if you win by 15, 5, 1 or half a point... a win is a win and they deserve to celebrate.

Congrats to the defense!!! What a great effort... they only gave up one big play (the first TD).. and with the game on the line.. they stopped Lake Washington when only 3- yards separated us from a win or a tie.
The offense made a few mistakes... but I was happy with some of the holes we created. I told the boys.. rather than try to run 50- yards for a td on every play... sometimes we take the first hole and cut for 5-8 yards. We'll work on that and some other things this week. It's also extremely difficult to overcome 2- long TD runs that are called back by penalties. In atleast one of those two cases... there was no reason to toss a flag.. the ball was just crossing the goal line when he called us on it... we really could have had that team down by 3- TD's if not for the penalties.. and the game would have been well in hand... Oh well.. that's sports.. especially when they're 8 and 9 years old.

So.. we're 3-1 through 4 games.. a very nice start to the season. Next week we play 5- Star Liberty. They have some talent... but so do we... I'm condfident our boys can hang with them.

Don't forget.. Monday night we practice up at Central Park in the Highlands. We're scimmaging Issaquah Gold and Issaquah Purple. It's the 2nd time we're taking on Issaquah Gold... they are very good and should help us get ready for the next game. Today Issaquah Gold beat an undefeated and very good Eastlake Black team 19-0... This is a good team to practice our inside runs against.. because they're very tough!!

Please have the kids there by 4:45 so we can get organized...

Take care and thanks for your continues support and spirit.

Skyline High School Varsity Game vs. Issaquah - Parking

    Spartans -

Tomorrow night at 7pm is the big game with Skyline High School taking on Issaquah High.

We have been informed by Mary Queen of Peace (the Catholic Church directly across the street) that there is a funeral there TOMORROW EVENING.

They are asking for all our Spartan families to look to park in one of the other church parking lots or over at City Hall. The lower parking lot will be reserved solely for the funeral.

Please be respectful of the funeral and the family during this difficult time.

    Thanks for your cooperation.

Practice Change Monday / 5:00 at Skyline HS

    Hi Rookie Green:

Monday night's practice will be held at Skyline HS. Not on the field, but in a classroom watching the tape of Saturday's game. Have the kids wear either a practice jersey or a game jersey and shorts or jeans. NO PADS, NO HELEMTS!!!

Coach Rosemont is kind enough to set up his room with the over-head projector we need to show the kids some of the things we're doing right and wrong as a team. You can drop your kids off in the round-about right in front of the school where the basketball gym is. If you're facing Skyline HS from 228th... it's around to the left... the coaches will wait for all of the kids and then at 5pm we'll walk up as a team. This is a players and coaches only viewing... we have notes and plays we need to hurry through.. so we'd like to be able to address the kids in a timely manner.

We'll walk the kids back down just before 7pm.

Please e-mail me to confirm you've seen this change...

Also, the game film is now up and ready to view. I know you all have busy lives... but take a few moments to watch with your sons if you can. It'll be very easy to see the little things they can change that will make a big difference. Speaking for the offense. You can watch one play that works for 25-30 yards and the next play that gets stopped for a loss. Often times, it's just one player.. taking that play off. Some kids are improvingly greatly at understanding their responsibilities... others are still struggling or just not interested in making enough effort every play. Last week we talked with some kids (including my own) about blocking until the whistle. Please pick out those plays with your kids and it'll make a huge difference.. plus get them ready for tomorrow's session.

Take care... see you tomorrow at Skyline HS.

28-6 win, 2-1 record, long way to go

    Hi Rookie Green:

It was a much improved Rookie Green team against Bainbridge. Blocking was "MUCH" better and the defense was solid. It was only after the boys took their foot off the gas pedal that they gave up a late TD.

We have practice this week on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. We may try to turn one of those practices into a "game film" viewing session at Coach Rob's classroom at Skyline HS (stay tuned on that.. we'll see).

Tell the boys to enjoy this one until Monday night.... and then turn the switch,... because Lake Washington is waiting for them next Saturday.

    Coach Mike

Awesome practice!!! / Game Saturday... please have them at Skyline 10:45 at latest

    Hi Rookie Green:

Last night's practice was awesome!! We spent the entire practice on "blocking schemes"... not just blocking... but knowing the play and knowing your responsibility. I'm extremely confident (ok hopeful) the kids will show major improvement in this area Saturday. We told the boys instead of it being like a school musical performance where many of our boys mouth the words and can hide up there on stage.. imagine that each play is a solo on stage... and if you mouth the words... the school performance takes a turn South!!

The kids seemed eager to learn... soaked in plenty and they're ready for a major rebound Saturday!!

Game time vs Bainbridge Island Saturday is Noon... it's important to have the kids there by 10:45. Please don't hesitate to ask for a car pool if this presents a "time problem" in the home.

    See ya this weekend.

** Reminder on Scrimmage tomorrow **

    Rookie Green,

Please wear your "Green" Game Uniforms tomorrow for our scrimmage against Issaquah. They are going to be wearing their game "Purple" Game Uniforms.

Thanks and see you all tomorrow.

New week ahead! Scrimmage Monday and practice Wednesday

    Hi Rookie Green:

Saturday was a learning experience!! In 4-5 years of coaching several sports and dozens of teams I have never, ever been a part of such a rough experience on a youth sports field. That Mt. Si team was talented, well coached, aggressive and ready to play. It's the Rookie level and it's important we look at this as a learning experience. There is much to be "taken away" from a game like that... as opposed to always getting your way. As I told the kids... this wasn't the Super Bowl. It's Rookie football game #2... and the coaches and players must forget it and move on to game #3 against Bainbridge Island. By the way.. Bainbridge lost Saturday 6-0 to Inglemoor... the team we beat last weekend.. hopefully our boys will practice well this week.. and we can turn the tables in a big way!!

This week is interesting. We have only 2- practice days scheduled. Monday and Wednesday... from 5-7.. please have the boys there by 4:45pm. Monday we actually have a scrimmage against one of the Issaquah teams.. that will start at 5:15 or 5:20 (at our practice field) ... Then Wednesday we have a regular practice. As we discussed before the season... after 2- games (NOW) kids can ask to try out for new positions. Please e-mail me or coach Eric and let us know another position your child might want to try out for. If your Spartan is happy in his current position.. then please don't send an e-mail. I can't promise a change.. but I will promise we will consider it and give your son that try-out. Ultimately, it's a balancing act.. trying to figure out a way to effectively field an offense and a defense. Trust me when I say.. the coaches want all of our kids to be successful as a team and get the most out of the experience. So we will do the best we can.. given everything there is to consider.

Here's to a new week and a new Rookie Green outcome...

    Coach Mike

PS: see u Monday at 4:45pm at Pine Lake Middle School

Saturday 12:15 Issaquah High School / Home Green Jerseys

    Hi Skyline Green:

Gametime Saturday is 1:30 at Issaquah HS vs. Mt. Si Red. Please have the kids on the field no later than 12:15.

Instead of splitting up players in a draft like Skyline does... Mt. Si carries an "A" team and a "B" team.. Red is the "A" team.. so our boys are in for quite a challenge. With that in mind... keep those kiddos rested so they're reading to rock on Saturday.

Also.. have them wear their home "Green" jerseys.

    Go Skyline Green!!!!

    Week 1 Scores & Standings

    Rookie Green is 1-0

Nice job Saturday night by our boys!!   A 19-6 road win over a well-coached and "BIG" Inglemoor team.  For a 1st game there were more positives than negatives.  But there is plenty we can improve upon.  We'll do that this week as we get ready for a very talented Mt. Si Red team.  This team is probably the best team we'll face during the regular season.

The practice schedule is Monday, Wednesday and Thursday this week.  NO SCRIMMAGE THIS WEEK !!!!   Issaquah decided to wait until the following week.

See ya Monday night at 4:45.

    Mike D

PS: We're all kind of learning the ropes together on this, but... it's extremely important that kids are at the game on time.  On time means that they arrive at the field and check in with a coach 1 hour and 15 minutes before we are scheduled to play.  If your child is 0-15 minutes late, they will miss the 1st quarter of the game.  If they are more than 15 minutes late, the will miss the first half.  If your child is more than 30 minutes late, there is a high likely hood that they will miss weigh-in and therefore the game all together.  Please plan accordingly and give yourself enough time for driving and any navigation challenges you may have.

A few final things Rookie Green

    Hi folks:

Looking forward to tonight. There's a league rule I want you to know about. We may never be in this position... but just in case we are. A team can NEVER have a lead of more than 32 points. It's a sportsmanship rule. If it ever happens, the coach is suspended for the next week. So if we are ever leading by 27,, 28.. etc... the kids can not score... Your child may run out of bounds on purpose or stop before the goal line... wanted you to know in advance WHY that's happening.

And speaking for sportsmanship. We have a GREAT group of parents. The Seahawks game... Huskies practice... pizza night... what a nice football family we have. Just like any family there will be bumps in the road... especially when it comes to the best interest of our children. I've been to many a youth football game when the whispers begin... "why didn't so and so block this guy.... why does so and so get the ball so often... why does the coach... why this.. why that..." We have not played a real game yet... so our boys will face adversity.. botched snaps... botched plays,,, heartbreaking losses (hopefully not). Just know that the volunteer adults on the field (coaches..managers... etc) love being around your boys and despite being tough on them at times.. we will also build them up and pat them on the back and give them the comfort they need.. I just want to use this e-mail to ask all parents/fans to root for each and every kid on this football team. Remember who's sitting around you.. no matter the skill level of their "little Spartan" those parents around you love their kids just as much as you do.. Sorry to be so corny... it's just very important to me that we all step into this experience together and do the best we can from the get go... to make it a rewarding experince for as many families as possible.

    Thanks...

Can't wait to see the boys tonight in their road white uniforms..

    Coach Mike

DON'T FORGET / WHITE UNIFORMS FOR ROAD GAMES!!!!!

White uniforms for the game today please.

    Rookie Green spirit and support

    Hello Rookie Green parents,
I am our head cheerleader and wanted to get everyone up to speed on what type of team spirit we will be showing during the games.

Every Saturday, I will bring a spirit can to the game.  This can (decorated specifically for the rookie green team), will be shaken during the game to cheer our boys on...now what makes it loud, is the coins and dollar bills we parents drop into it based on the team completing a great play (think touchdowns, defensive stops, first downs at clinch time etc).  All the money collected will go towards our end of season party....based on what I've seen from our boys, I am guessing the jar will be full by season's end, and we will have one incredible party.
So save your change and small bills from the week, and bring them to show your spirit and support!

Thanks to Elizabeth Byrne, we now have a cow bell that we can bang and use to cheer on the boys.  If we have any parents with rhythm, let us know if you can put together a "rookie green" chant :)

Lastly, I received confirmation that we can have signs at the game to show our spirit, but we cannot have them on the field (last year at half time the boys ran thru the sign), so, we will make a sign to hold in our seating area each week that says something like "crush 'em rookie green", "Spartan Power", or "Go Spartans", etc...you get the drift.  We will usually host the sign making event on Thursday's during practice.  More details to come.  Since we have the pizza party tonight, I will surprise everyone Saturday with our first team sign.

See everyone tonight!  Goooo Rookie Green!!!

Thursday we're scrimmaging the Spartan Rookie White team from 6:15- 7:00pm.

Still taking feedback on next Tuesday's potential scrimmage down in Issaquah. So far,,, it would be a go.. unless I hear from more folks who are in a bind..

    Saturday's game... carpool??

    Hey gang:

I've been asked if we're going to all meet and leave as a team for Saturday games to allow some parents to show up later. The problem with that is... a few late families.. leads to the whole team arriving late. I think I'd rather have you folks reach out and set up some carpools... Trade off week to week with each other. The four coaches will obviously be going early... I'm always fine taking a few kids.. I'm sure a majority of parents are up for carpools...  Maybe somebody could volunteer to be the "carpool organizer" and set things up each week..

    Mike
